The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Heersink School of Medicine and Children’s of Alabama, in partnership with CareerPhysician, invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Division of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology.
This is a high-impact leadership opportunity to expand and elevate a growing division within one of the nation’s leading public academic medical centers. With strong institutional investment in immunology, access to robust research infrastructure, and a large and diverse clinical population, the incoming Director will have the platform to build a premier regional and national program in pediatric allergy and immunology.
About the Division
The Division of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology provides comprehensive care across the full spectrum of allergic and immunologic diseases, including asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, food allergy, urticaria, angioedema, stinging insect allergy, and drug allergy. The Division also has expertise in diagnosing and managing primary immunodeficiencies, including Severe Combined Immune Deficiency (SCID), antibody deficiencies, phagocyte disorders, and complement deficiencies.
Faculty are engaged in clinical and translational research, with active areas of investigation including food and drug allergy, immune-mediated disease, and infection-related immunologic conditions. The Division is well-positioned for growth through collaboration with UAB’s expanding immunology ecosystem.
The Opportunity
The Director will provide strategic, clinical, and academic leadership for the Division, with a mandate to grow clinical programs, expand research, and develop innovative models of care. This role offers the opportunity to shape a regional referral hub for complex allergic and immunologic diseases while advancing national prominence in the field.
Key priorities and opportunities include:
- Expanding subspecialty programs in areas such as food allergy, immunodeficiency, and severe asthma/biologic therapies
- Enhancing multidisciplinary collaborations across pulmonology, dermatology, gastroenterology, and infectious diseases
- Recruiting and mentoring faculty and advanced practice providers to support programmatic growth
- Strengthening clinical trials and translational research initiatives
The Director will benefit from close collaboration with the UAB Immunology Institute, which offers access to state-of-the-art research cores, established translational science infrastructure, and federally funded training programs, including T32 and CTSA support.

Qualifications
- MD, DO, MD/PhD, or equivalent degree
- Board-certified/board-eligible in Allergy & Immunology
- Eligibility for an unrestricted medical license in the State of Alabama
- Academic accomplishments and leadership experience commensurate with appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level
